2 Cards for 2 Funerals - 49th & Market

Welcome,

Some people, even when they age, for some reason you expect to be around for a long time, even if there were in their 90's. While growing up, these two people were very much a part of my childhood. Coming back to the area almost 8 years ago, these people were still here and a part of my friends' life.

Ruby passed away last week, and Barry just a couple of days ago. They were 96 and 97 respectively. These two people are from two different families, but we all knew each other. This means of course that I needed to make a couple of sympathy cards.

Whenever I come across paper that I really like I but a few sheets of them. That is often the case with 49th & Market. I kept them pretty simple, and just did some fussy cutting. So, here are the two cards I made.

It is always nice to use floral paper with the background piece including flowers and then attach layers of fussy cut flowers overtop of them to create dimension and a little depth.

I will start with the card on the right, meant for Ruby's family. It is more feminine.

The Altenew sentiment is heat embossed in gold, and has a few layers of fussy cutting.

Next is the card for Barry's family. Up until his stroke a little over a year ago, this man was so very active! I couldn't imagine living to be 97! Here is a closer look at his card.

You can see that even thought there are flowers, the colours and type of flowers and foliage make it more easily a masculine card. This one has only one additional layer of fussy cutting over the background piece, and I used the same sentiment embossed in gold.

Since I have been using so many envelopes for Christmas cards, and only a few left, I did have a stack of black envelopes. So I decided that with a gold gel pen, black envelopes would be OK for sympathy cards.

That is it for these simple cards. But if you have beautiful floral paper, I challenge you to use it like I did for these two cards. You may come across a new way to make some cards.

Sympathy Card - With Altenew Stamp & Die Sets

Welcome!

Today I am sharing with you a sympathy card that I made for my brother-in-law whose father just passed away. I wanted to make something quickly to mail to the US, and so I knew I needed to draw on my layered stamps from Altenew, and drew my inspiration from one of my own earlier creations.

This time I opted for a larger card (A7), and also chose to add the rose from Bold Blossoms to the Majestic Blooms.

Since this card is going in the mail, I did not pop anything up except for the sentiment strip.

The photo above and below are just a little closer look at the flowers and leaves that I stamped and die cut.

Side view shows that the flowers and leaves were glued down without popping up with foam squares or tape.

I love the colour combination for this card, and believe that my brother-in-law (& sister) will like the card. The one thing I wish I had done differently is heat embossing the sentiment in black rather than just ink stamping it.

Heartfelt Sympathy

A friend's father recently passed away, so I used a batch of sunflowers that I had colored with no specific purpose in mind and constructed a sympathy card.

You can see a hint of my workspace in the background. I'll get pictures of my craft area up soon. :)

It's been awhile since I played along with Scrapbooker's Paradise but found the nautical challenge irresistible.

I used the colors from the current CR84FN challenge and the sketch from CAS(E) This Sketch.

I double-stamped the sentiment to give it that slightly shadowed look.

Brighter Days

A quick (perhaps a little too quick!) card using Lighten Up stamps/dies:

Using post it notes to mask the center of this small square card, I misted the border with Sunflower Glimmer Mist. There's a bit of Candlelight on there as well since I had to do a bit of pump switcheroo. I scored the outline and masked the outside to stamp the lamps. I was trying to be a little symbolic with the drab shades (excuse the pun!) and the pop of color.

Moxie Fab Fascination with Feathers, Young Crafters Unite and Simon Says Stamp

I'm so excited about Moxie Fab's feather challenge! I have a Flourishes stamp set that I just HAD to have and yet still hadn't used!

I started out by heat embossing and fussy-cutting 2 peacocks. I then tried to figure out how to use them on cards.

This was my first card attempt but the peacocks ended up not really GOING. So rather than forcing it, I just let it be.

I love that Autumn Rose twill with Smokey Shadow! I'm entering this one in Young Crafters Unite stitching challenge.

I decided that I needed to nest the sentiment with the peacocks and so made the following two cards for the Moxie Fab feather challenge:

I used Soft Stone card bases on all three cards. The first peacock was white heat embossed on Sweet Blush cardstock and then inked with Victorian Velvet distress ink. The second peacock was white heat embossed on Soft Stone cardstock and inked with Pumice Stone distress ink.

Don't be surprised if I create a few more feather-themed cards!

Runway Inspired Challenge #7

A lot of last minute challenge submissions for me... I'm so sad to have missed the last JUGS and Embellish challenges... :(

Here is my take on the current Runway Inspired Challenge:

I used Lisa Johnson's Copic-colored embossing technique for the Mehndi Medallion. I white heat embossed the stamped image on black cardstock, colored at random with Copic markers and plastered it over top of some ruffled red grosgrain (technique I used here except I really did use a needle and thread for this).

Moxie Fab: Cure for the Winter Blues and CAS-ual Fridays 43

Squeezing another one in under the wire!

I was really inspired by Cath's pictures on the Cure for the Winter Blues challenge (particularly the one pictured below my card). Here is what I came up with:

I embossed the Angled Rectangle die and then masked it. I drew lines before stamping and while you can see my erase marks, I kinda like the effect.

Moxie Fab and Play Date Cafe Challenges

After so  long, I'm having so much fun. I've been checking out my bookmarks for favorite challenge blogs and am in the mood to wish I could participate in them all! Dana opted to go with the Moxie Fab Square Card Challenge, and I love her entry! I have so much fun seeing what everyone does with the very same sketch. But, for me, I decided upon the Vertical Challenge you see to the left, and to really go vertical with a tall card that fits into a business sized envelope..

This is my entry for the Moxie Fab Vertical Sketch Challenge combined with The Play Date Cafe Color Challenge of white and black with a hint of red.

I wanted to have one color be more dominate and it took me a while to try and visualize various scenarios and come up with a plan. There were so many ideas floating around in my head it took time for me to decide upon the best approach. I could use black as the base color with a little white and the touch of red, but in the end I felt white would be the best color to serve as the base color in creating the best balance with a bit of black and red.  Perhaps it was the inspirational photo that helped to make that final decision.

It may a little difficult to see in the photo that the black pop up strip on the card is embossed. I used Cuttlebug's  Kassie's Brocade embossing folder for this.

The touch of red on my card are the three ribbon strips adhered on top of the white with black pin stripes paper. I added the stamped and black heat embossed pattern at the bottom. The sentiment is black heat embossed as well.

I couldn't just leave it at that; it didn't quite seem completed at that point. That's when I added the three white buttons.

Since returning to Victoria after a 30 year absence, many people I knew growing up here are so much older and with Victoria as the Seniors capital, it never hurts to have a few sympathy cards on hand as these things often happen expectantly.

CAS-ual Fridays: Long Card (2)

Here is the other idea I woke up with this morning. It wasn't as finely-tuned so some of this was invented as I went along. I'm okay with how it turned out. (Normally, I would try to space out my card posts but I'm wary of some deadlines...)

Again, I used CAS-ual Fridays' long card challenge. It's a somewhat masculine sympathy card, awaiting a particular recipient. I really like how the grommets I applied at the end added to this card.

It's difficult to tell from the photo, but the medallions were inked with orange and then burnt orange around the edges. The blue was stamped afterwards, right over the orange.

Playing in Paradise Challenge 16: Black & White

I am so excited about today's challenge at the Scrapbooker's Paradise blog... Julie invited us to create an all black and white creation...

and the Design Team created some beauties! I definitely invite you to check them all out!

For my project, I wanted to try out Gina K's lattice technique, as well as some white heat embossing.

I really like how the inking makes it look a little distressed.

I used a Grand Square Nestability to cut emboss and keep a white border and scored the "lattice" lines with my Martha Stewart scoreboard. Then I used my Memento Tuxedo Black inkpad to ink it up.

The rose and leaves were stamped in Versamark ink on black cardstock and then heat embossed using white embossing powder and my Marvy heat tool. I cut them out and popped them up off of the lattice background. I tried adding dimension by painting the rose with bleach but it didn't have any effect.

The sentiment was done by die-cutting Spellbinders Labels 4 and stamping the border and sentiment.

I went back after taking the previous photo and added some Glossy Accents dew drops and random black rhinestones. I think I overdid it... ;)

Would actually appreciate tips on fixing this, please!!
